2 Molotov cocktails found at National Guard Armory

No damage was reported, police say

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Several federal agencies were called Tuesday to assist in an investigation into who left two Molotov cocktails at the Florida National Guard Armory on San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine, authorities said.

An employee found the two fire bombs on the grounds of the armory about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the St. Augustine Police Department said.

The two bottles were broken and police smelled an odor when they arrived, Cpl. Jeff Truncellito told News4Jax. Neither had ignited.

A rag was also found in the gas tank of a vehicle at the armory, which wad not been ignited, Truncellito said.

No damage was reported.

"After an incident like this occurs, we will step up out presence in areas of government buildings. We'll have officers out there making extra patrols in the area. If they see anything even remotely out of place, we'll investigate it," Truncellito said.

Truncellito said the Police Department notified the FBI; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the National Criminal Investigation Service; the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the state fire marshal's office, which is serving as the lead agency. The St. Augustine Fire Department and the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office were also called.

The Florida National Guard told News4Jax that it cannot comment on the incident at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
