St. Johns County preps for beach erosion

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Beach-goers and officials are preparing for heavy winds, rains, and potentially dangerous rip currents starting late Wednesday. For some, that could mean significant beach erosion. The biggest area of concern is in St. Johns County.

The Coastline is 42 miles long and they say erosion can happen on any section at any time. This is something the people living along the coastline are aware of, but still it's a concern especially when there's a hurricane as powerful as Matthew.

South Ponte Vedra, Summer haven, St Augustine Beach and Vilano beach are the most vulnerable areas for erosion.

By Wednesday, winds from Hurricane Matthew could wear down the already eroding sand.

Programs are in place to replace it. One of the programs on the coastline is led by the Army Corps of Engineers. The dredging project is currently underway, but it may be suspended once Hurricane Matthew gets closer.

But right now, St. Johns County officials say they are aware of the possibility and they are monitoring the path of Hurricane Matthew, but right now no one living on the coast should be alarmed.

SJC Officials just want people to be aware that this can happen and to monitor their homes and properties.
