Car crashes into Touchton Road apartment

Residents evacuated on Christmas Eve

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A car plowed into an apartment building on Jacksonville’s Southside on Christmas Eve.

It happened Friday afternoon at a complex on Touchton Road East, just north of Gate Parkway.

The Sky 4 helicopter flew over the scene, and it appeared that a red vehicle went through a window. Yellow tape could also be seen surrounding the area, and there were at least two Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office cruisers outside the apartment building.

According to a witness, the red car hit another nearby car and then traveled over a concrete barrier into a man’s bedroom.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and Lloyd Gillespie was not inside his bedroom when it happened.

“I was at the apartment and just got through cleaning it all up for Christmas and everything, and I was in having lunch. I heard a boom outside and I figured something’s not right, and then the next thing I know, the car’s coming into the apartment,” Gillespie told News4JAX. “Holy cow, the whole apartment shook. I mean, it was just unbelievable shaking.”

Gillespie and other residents on the side of the building that the car struck were evacuated due to structural concerns. He said he will be staying at a nearby hotel.

A contractor was called to examine the building.
