Nichole Meyers’ kids got their first dental cleaning at this event. She said getting this treatment was vital for her family.

They needed a first dental check up and dental care is very expensive,” Meyers said.

Meyers’ kids were among dozens who lined up for free dental care at Sulzbacher Village in Springfield as a part of the annual “Give Kids a Smile” campaign.

“I am grateful for it because, first of all, dental care and medical care in general is expensive. They are offering this to get the kids the care that they need,” Meyers said.

Dr. Jasmine Shakya never hesitates to volunteer.

“It is like giving. Our kids, a lot of kids out there need to care. There are not too many providers or offices that can give,” Shakya said. “That is the best gift that one can give. You can bring a smile to kids. They’ve been waiting for months and months to get it done and now they can get it for free. Taking the pain away.”

At this event, dentists offered a variety of services including routine, exams, cleanings, sealants, extractions, and simple fillings.

Sulzbacher Village is among the few places that can offer that care for free at times.

Dr. Shakya said she wishes a wide-reaching event like this can happen more than once a year.

“We do free treatments all the time. There are a lot of patients out there. I wish that we could do more and more to take care of our kids,” Shakya said.

Giving these kids the smile they deserve.
