Construction project planned to widen New Berlin Road met with concerns from Northside residents

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Jacksonville residents got a chance to look at plans for a road widening project on New Berlin Road.

The project extends from New Berlin Road to Cedar Point to the Staratt and Pulaski intersection. Construction isn’t expected to start for about three years, and the city is talking about completing the project in sections.

The road will expand from a two-lane to a three-lane road with a 12-foot shared-use path on one side and a 6-foot sidewalk on the other side.

Residents on Thursday shared their concerns about increasing traffic, crumbling roadways, and drainage issues.

“Just having one street like New Berlin be the main way in and out. A lot of people use the different schools out here, so it’s going to be packed. It’s already packed out here. If you’re here around 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. You’ll see the line from the red light down there is all the way up to here, so construction is probably going to make it ten times worse,” Keethrone Eugene said.

Councilman Mike Gay said he’s been taking in residents’ concerns.

“You know we’ve been hearing concerns about needing to get this project done. We’ve got massive, massive backups through New Berlin Road. We’ve got schools. We’ve got developments. So it’s way, way needed,” Gay said.

Once construction begins, the project isn’t expected to be finished until about five years later.
