George Zimmerman stopped for speeding in Texas

Forney police say Zimmerman had gun, was let go with warning

FORNEY, Texas – George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin was armed with a gun when he was pulled over for speeding in Texas, police said.

According to the Forney Police Department, Zimmerman was stopped just before 1 p.m. Sunday while traveling westbound on Highway 80 in Kaufman County.

Zimmerman was pulled over in a 2008 Honda pickup truck with a Florida license plate and told the policeman that he was armed. The officer instructed Zimmerman to put the weapon in his glove compartment and said that if after checking his background, and if there were no criminal issues, he could go on his way.

Legally, Zimmerman is allowed to carry a weapon.

In dashcam video , Zimmerman could be heard asking the officer if he recognized him and the officer said he did not. Zimmerman also said he wasn't sure where he was heading when the officer asked him.

Zimmerman was given a warning for speeding and let go. The traffic stop lasted 5 minutes, police said.

Forney is located about 30 minutes outside of Dallas.

Zimmerman's attorneys said they won't make any comments about Zimmerman's whereabouts "for his safety" and will "work to protect his privacy."

Zimmerman's brother, Robert, released a statement on behalf of the Zimmerman family, saying:

"Our family receives innumerable death threats on a daily basis. We all continue to take our security and privacy very seriously and go to great lengths to ensure our safety in accordance with the law. Despite the truth coming to light in a court of law, persistent circulation of misinformation and speculation continues to put us all at risk, especially George. Speculation as to any family members' whereabouts - either by the press, or by individuals - is irresponsible and counterproductive."

The stop marks the second time Zimmerman has been spotted in the public since the July 13 "not guilty" verdict in his second-degree murder trial.

Days after Zimmerman was acquitted, he reportedly helped pull a family out of an overturned vehicle on Interstate 4 in Seminole County.
