JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Humane Society is expecting a full recovery for a pit bull who had been beaten and left in a stranger's yard.
The person who found Flo Friday morning and called Animal Care and Protective Services, which took her to the Humane Society.
"It appears her skull was crushed with a metal object of some kid pretty severely. So much so that they had to put pins in to hold the front of her skull together," said Denise Deisler, Executive Director of the Jacksonville Humane Society.
Veterinarians found metal fragments in Flo's skull and mouth, where her teeth had been knocked out. Animal Care and Protective Services and the Humane Society are trying to find out who abused Flo.
"I think everyone in the community should be frightened by the people who would take advantage of a completely helpless being," said Deisler. "Whether they be animals, children, those who cannot defend themselves."
In June, the Humane Society saved another dog, Bo, who was found close to death with multiple stab wounds.
After an investigation, Charlotte Streeter was charged with animal abuse. That investigation also resulted in elder abuse charges against Streeter.
The Humane Society nursed Bo back to good health. The dog has since been adopted by new owners.
Deilser hopes Flo will have a similar happy ending to her rough period, too.
"She's recuperating nicely, but we encourage folks in the community, if they hear anything... call Crime Stoppers," said Deisler.
