Grandfather, 61, Shot In Robbery Attempt, Police Say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police are seeking two men who fired on a grandfather and his 15-year-old grandson at the Orange Park Kennel Club Saturday night, wounding the grandfather, Orange Park police said.

The teenager told investigators that he and his grandfather were leaving the club at about 9:20 p.m. when the men approached them and demanded money, police said.

One of the robbers pointed a gun at Thompson, police said. The grandfather, Rodney Joe Thompson, 61, fought with the robbers and a shot was fired. Thompson was shot in the right side of his chest but was conscious and breathing when police arrived.

Thompson was taken to Shands Hospital in Jacksonville and was listed in critical condition Sunday.

The two robbers fled north on Park Avenue in a dark-colored car after the shot was fired, police said.

A club security officer said a suspicious man was seen 10 minutes before the shooting at the west entrance to the building at 455 Park Ave. The individual was wearing a heavy jacket, jeans and a hat turned backward, police said.

Police said a fingerprint from the entrance window was obtained. Investigators planned to review a surveillance tape. No shell casings were immediately found.

The Clay County Sheriff?s Office assisted in the investigation.
