American swimmer Lilly King took home 100-meter breaststroke gold in record fashion Monday night at the Rio Games.
King set a new Olympic record in finishing the race in 1:04.93 seconds to outlast the late-charging Russian Yulia Efimova, who had to settle for silver with a time of 1:05.50.
King's teammate Katie Meili took bronze with a time of 1:05.69.
King, a 19-year-old Indiana native who swims for Indiana University, is swimming in her first Olympics. She'll also represent the U.S. in the 200-meter breaststroke and be part of the 4x100-meter medley relay team hoping to repeat the U.S.'s gold medal performance from London four years ago.
Meili, a 25-year-old Texas native who is also part of the 4x100 medley team, also medaled. Like King, Meili is also an Olympic rookie.
