Jaguars respond to Branden Albert's wish to end retirement

Albert retired last Monday after 3 training camp practices

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle Branden Albert has apparently had a change of heart about retiring.

Albert asked to return to the team Monday, according to multiple reports.

The 32-year-old Albert surprised coach Doug Marrone last week by walking into his office and saying he planned to retire. Albert abruptly quit after three training camp practices in which he looked out of shape and past his prime.

At the moment it’s not clear why Albert chose to walk away after nine NFL seasons or why he has suddenly changed his mind. With Albert out of the picture the Jaguars will likely turn to rookie Cam Robinson at left tackle.

After declining to comment on the situation Monday the Jaguars released the following statement on Tuesday.

On Monday, July 31, OL Branden Albert informed Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone that he was stepping away from the team.

On Friday, August 4, Albert approached the team about the opportunity to return to the NFL at a later date.

On Monday, August 7, team officials met with Albert and mutually agreed to place him on the club’s reserve/retired list.

The team will provide no further comment on this situation.

Albert was scheduled to make $8.8 million this season and $9.5 million in 2018.
