Tom Hackney spent 29 years with JSO and rose through the ranks from an officer, to homicide detective to homicide sergeant then to Lieutenant, Assistant Chief, Chief of Investigations, Director of Investigations and Homeland Security and Director of Personnel and Professional Standards.

Tom Hackney retired in 2020, and was most remembered for his role in the 2015 Lonzie Barton case.  He led detectives and searchers for months until police eventually found the little boy's remains. Tom Hackney held numerous news conferences, and left no stone unturned and fought for justice for the little boy and his family.

Tom Hackney joined the News4JAX team as Crime and Safety Analyst in February 2024, saying, "I am excited to collaborate with my colleagues at News4JAX to keep our viewers informed, empowered, and above all safe in these ever trying times."
