Trump drilling reversal could boost coastal GOP senators

COLUMBIA, S.C. With one stroke, President Donald Trumps abrupt reversal on offshore drilling this week has loosened a political vise that was tightening around three Republicans senators running for reelection in coastal states where drilling is widely opposed. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue of Georgia, all Democratic targets. Brian Kemp, another Trump ally, and his Republican predecessor, Nathan Deal, have opposed drilling off the state's 100-mile (160 km) coast. The decision by President Trump to include South Carolina meets the desires of our coastal communities and states leadership, Graham said. Results: U.S. House, Georgia State Senate races

Georgia voters returned to the polls Tuesday for runoffs to settle party nominations in four congressional races and 17 legislative races. Heres a look at the races on Southeast Georgia ballots:1ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT(As of 11:30 p.m., the votes were still being counted for this race.) Democratic voters will decide on Lisa Ring or Joyce Marie Griggs as the challenger to Republican incumbent Rep. GEORGIA SENATE DISTRICT 3Republican Shelia McNeil was chosen with 63% of the vote. PIERCE COUNTYRepublican Sheriff Ramsey Bennett took 52% of the vote compared to Blackshear Police Maj. Robby Boatright, who took 48% of the vote.

US House runoffs top ballot for Georgia voters

Georgia voters will return to the polls Tuesday for runoffs to settle party nominations in four congressional races and 17 legislative races, including Southeast Georgias U.S. House district, a state Senate seat, a couple of area county commissioner races and Pierce County sheriff. GEORGIA SENATE DISTRICT 3Republican voters in a sprawling state Senate district that includes Brantley, Camden, Glynn, McIntosh and part of Charlton counties will determine their candidate for the state seat now held by William Ligon, R-White Oak. GENERAL ASSEMBLYThere are 17 party runoffs and one special election runoff for House and Senate seats in the General Assembly. Sharon Beasley-Teague has represented House District 65 in south Fulton and part of Douglas counties since 1993. In DeKalb Countys House District 86, incumbent Michelle Henson, who has been in the House since 1991, won a plurality of the vote in a four-way race.

Congressman says convention will benefit both North Florida & South Georgia

Buddy Carter, R-Georgia, says safety will be the top priority when the Republican National Convention visits Jacksonville in August for President Trumps renomination speech. Carter said the convention is good for both sides of the Florida/Georgia line. Itll be beneficial to us in South Georgia, no question, he said. Hes passionate about health care issues and said hes concerned about the increase in reported COVID-19 cases. The RNC is a short-term, one-time boost, but Carter clearly wants the economy restarted and restored.

Democratic Senate race headlines ballots in Tuesdays Georgia Primary

Georgia Democrats will choose between seven contenders in a U.S. Senate race to challenge incumbent Republican David Perdue on Tuesday. The primary will be the first statewide test of Georgias new voting machines, which combines familiar touchscreen machines with printed-out paper ballots. Whats on the Georgia primary ballot? Although the two must live in District 4, which covers northern and eastern parts of Georgia, the race is on the ballot statewide. Blackman lost to incumbent Republican Lauren Bubba McDonald in 2014, while Noel lost a Democratic primary for the utility regulatory commission in a different district in 2018.

Republicans tour Savannah as possible GOP convention site

SAVANNAH, Ga. Organizers of the Republican National Convention are giving Georgias oldest city a close look as a possible replacement venue for the August convention after President Donald Trump dumped Charlotte, North Carolina, as the site where hell accept the GOP nomination. Brian Kemp joined GOP convention CEO Marcia Lee Kelly on Monday for a tour of Savannah and its convention center on Hutchinson Island, which overlooks the city's historic and tourist-friendly riverfront. The group was greeted by Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, City Hall spokesman Nick Zoller said. He sounded skeptical Monday about the city hosting the GOP convention. The GOP convention would be the largest event to come to Savannah since President George W. Bush hosted the G-8 summit of world leaders on the Georgia coast in 2004.

Attorneys for Ahmaud Arberys family want Washington, D.C., involved in the case. Also this week, a lawyer for the Arbery family said that a federal prosecutor told the slain mans mother federal officials are looking into how the case was handled. Im much more comfortable now than I was, say a month ago, at what is happening, said U.S. Rep. News4Jax spoke with Carter on Thursday about the case and the controversy among his constituents. They were taken into custody less than two days after the case was handed over to Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
