Arthritis Foundation releases recommendations for using CBD products

Read full article: Arthritis Foundation releases recommendations for using CBD products

The Arthritis Foundation released guidelines offering some direction for those who want to use CBD products but stopped short of recommending the products for arthritis patients. The recommendation from the Arthritis Foundation is an attempt to provide some clarity, despite a lack of scientific evidence. The task of regulating CBD products has fallen on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but so far the agency has not done so. The Arthritis Foundation surveyed more than 2,600 patients suffering from arthritis, finding nearly 80% are currently using CBD, have used it, or are considering it for their joint pain, since there currently is no cure. Use caution if you are 25 years old or younger and using CBD products that contain THC.

Some operators are cashing in on the CBD craze by substituting cheap and illegal synthetic marijuana for real CBD in vapes and edibles such as gummy bears, an Associated Press investigation has found. Ten of the 30 contained synthetic marijuana, which is commonly known as K2 or spice. Gummy bears and other edibles accounted for 36 hits, while nearly all others were vape products. While synthetic marijuana is a concern, Weintraub said the industry has many reputable companies. But if CBD products are found to contain narcotics, the agency considers the investigation a job for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Three companies were sent letters this week by the Federal Trade Commission, warning them not to promise health benefits from cannabidiol products with science to back them up. Each company has advertised that its CBD products treat or cure serious diseases and health conditions, the FTC said. One company's website claims CBD "works like magic" to relieve "even the most agonizing pain" better than prescription opioid painkillers. The company also advertises CBD as a "miracle pain remedy" for both acute and chronic pain, including pain from cancer treatment and arthritis. In March 2019, the FTC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued similar joint warning letters to three CBD sellers.
