Theres still a lot of work to be done and I think the task force feels that sense of urgency, rightfully so, said Julie Wraithmell, Executive Director of Audubon Florida. In the end, the task force can only make recommendations. Its then up to the Department of Environmental Protection and lawmakers to act, but Wednesdays meeting puts that ball in motion.

"With the first human case of West Nile Virus detected, we want people to protect themselves. "DEP monitors mosquito populations across Pennsylvania for the presence of disease." Simple steps to eliminate standing water around the home include:Remove tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, discarded tires or any object that could collect standing water. Treat standing water that cannot be eliminated with Bti products which are sold at outdoor supply, home improvement and other stores.

Ron DeSantis and Cabinet members next week will consider spending just over $11 million of Florida Forever conservation funds to acquire more than 900 acres in three parts of the state. The pieces of land targeted for conservation are 717 acres within the Wakulla Springs Protection Zone in Wakulla County, 129 acres in Charlotte County and the 57-acre Fish Island in St. Johns County. The land in Wakulla County, south of Tallahassee, would require $4.2 million from the state. The property connects the Apalachicola National Forest with the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park. Department of Environmental Protection officials said they are seeking $2.54 million from the Federal Forest Legacy to reduce the cost.

Ron DeSantis signed into law Tuesday a measure that will shift 19 law enforcement officers focused on environmental crimes from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to the Department of Environmental Protection. DeSantis said during a bill-signing ceremony Tuesday at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center in Stuart that shifting the law-enforcement officers should make enforcement of environmental laws more effective. The creation of the Division of Law Enforcement within the Department of Environmental Protection will take effect Monday. Currently, the Department of Environmental Protection reimburses the commission for law enforcement services, which totaled about $16 million from three trust funds in the past year, according to a House analysis. The commission, which has more than 800 sworn officers, will continue to have law enforcement authority, such as patrolling, on state-owned land managed by the department.

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – A chemical company from central Florida lost its load in Flagler Beach Thursday morning, spilling 300 gallons of a sulfuric acid solution and closing a portion of State Road A1A. Hazmat crews neutralized the sulfuric acid solution spill by 2:30 p.m., and the Florida Department of Transportation reopened a portion of A1A by 5:30 p.m., Flagler County officials said. We don’t know how long all of that will take," Flagler County Public Safety Emergency Manager Steve Garten said Thursday. The Flagler Beach Public Works Department had the shoulder barricaded Friday as TME was still on site, said Flagler Beach City Manager Larry Newsom. Flagler Beach police are investigating the spill and charges against the driver of the truck are pending.
