Southeastern Grocers, which owns Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets, confirmed to News4JAX on Friday that it has laid off multiple employees as a part of a restructuring.

German grocery store company Aldi bought Winn-Dixie and Harveys grocery stores last year from Southeastern Grocers, the parent company based in Jacksonville.

They said they recently received an email saying that the stores affected by this acquisition will start the process of closing their pharmacies in the coming months.

Discount grocer Aldi says it's acquiring 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets in the Southern U.S. Under a proposed merger agreement, Aldi will acquire all outstanding shares of Jacksonville, Florida-based Southeastern Grocers Inc., the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys.

Aldi is buying 400 Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie grocery stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida from their parent company, Southeastern Grocers Inc.

With the help of customers, Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Jacksonville-based grocery store chain Winn-Dixie, raised more than $1.25 million through an annual six-week donation program to support scholarships for members of military families.

The Jacksonville Chapter of PFLAG received a $1,000 donation.

Pharmacies at Winn-Dixie stores and Harveys supermarkets will again give Johnson & Johnson vaccines and now offer shots without an appointment, parent company Southeastern Grocers announced Thursday.

The parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys is donating more than $460,000 to eight children’s hospitals across the Southeast, including a $147,000 donation to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville.

Southeastern Grocers said in an updated filing last week with the Securities and Exchange Commission it wanted to sell 8.9 million shares at $14 to $16. They were issued shares in exchange for debt when Southeastern Grocers completed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2018. Southeastern Grocers expects to operate 423 supermarkets under the Winn-Dixie, Harveys and Fresco y Mas brands after completing the sale of more than 100 stores, including stores operated under the Bi-Lo banner.
