On Friday, the state announced the wide-ranging winner, which features not only the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, but also Niagara Falls, a mountain range, and a Long Island lighthouse. All the finalists used blue and gold, an outline of the state, and the word "Excelsior," which is the Latin motto on the state seal that means "Ever upward."

New York became the sixth state to ban the so-called gay and trans "panic" defense Sunday, as millions of revelers celebrated WorldPride in Manhattan. The panic defense asks a jury to find that a victim's sexual orientation or gender identity is to blame for a defendant's violent reaction, including even murder. "New York has always been the home of the LGBTQ equality movement, always," said Gov. New York follows California, Rhode Island, Illinois, Nevada and Connecticut to pass such a law. New York City is playing host to WorldPride, the largest LGBTQ celebration in the world.
