JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Saturday, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrested an officer with the Bonifay Police Department for allegedly selling a controlled substance from his patrol car within 1000 feet of an assisted living facility. FDLE said the investigation into Dwayne White, 48, began in September at the request of the Holmes County Sheriff's Office after it received tips. Per Florida state law, a mug shot of White is not available due to his standing as a law enforcement officer. Earlier this month, the FDLE said undercover agents bought opioid tablets from White while he was in uniform and in his patrol car. The office of the state attorney, 14th Judicial Circuit is prosecuting the case.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Blue, the largest health insurer in Florida, announced Tuesday that it will not cover OxyContin in its commercial lines of business starting Jan. 1, 2018. Medicare Advantage products are excluded from this policy change, according to a statement by Florida Blue. Florida Blue is taking this step as one part of its efforts to fight the opioid epidemic in Florida. This type of consumption can quickly lead to addiction and overdose,” said Scott McClelland, Pharm.D., vice president of commercial and specialty pharmacy at Florida Blue. Florida Blue said they also established case management programs related to opioid usage that focuses on member education and safety.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – From local police to state troopers and federal agents, ending the opioid epidemic takes a lot of players. The top authority is the Drug Enforcement Administration, which is actively working to stop drugs at the border and to end both the supply and demand in Northeast Florida. A DEA agent told News4Jax that much of the heroin is coming from Colombia and the fentanyl from China. He said heroin laced with fentanyl is the most dangerous drug DEA agents deal with. The drugs are so toxic, agents investigating drug scenes now have to wear airtight hazmat suits -- two of them -- with an oxygen tank to help them breathe.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to warn parents not to give their children cough and pain medicines containing certain opioids. The FDA previously issued a warning in April that drugs containing codeine should not be used to treat pain or cough in children under 12. "Most of the actual deaths and adverse events results from self-administration of these medications by children less than 4 years of age. To avoid prescription medications with opioids, parents can try an over-the-counter version. Florida recently passed a law that requires people to be 18 or older to buy many of those over-the-counter medicines.
