It’s about this time every year where we look for Saharan dust to make its several thousand-mile trip across the Atlantic.

The tropics have been very quiet through the month of July.

The tropical trade winds blow from east to west throughout the year, but in the northern hemisphere they’re pronounced during the summer months. As winter low pressures from colder places near the poles fade away and stay well away from the equator, large high pressures develop.

It is dust season in the Atlantic and a big plume is drifting westward. Some of it is forecast to cover South Florida and the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday or Thursday. Little if any is expected to impact those of us in northeast Florida.
