TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Animal crackers and gummy bears are off the table, but Florida medical marijuana operators finally will be allowed to manufacture and sell THC-infused cookies, cakes and candies, after state health officials released a rule outlining edible marijuana products. Emergency rules generally can only be in effect for 90 days. Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Frieds office has authorized four of the states medical-marijuana operators --- Parallel Florida LLC, Curaleaf, VidaCann and Trulieve --- to start manufacturing edible products. The health departments emergency rule goes further than the state law in trying to discourage children from consuming edibles. Rivers noted that state health officials will conduct a full rule-making process at some point.

Copyright 2019 CNNDETROIT (CNN) - Doctors at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit performed what they believe is the first double lung transplant in the US for a male patient whose lungs were irreparably damaged after vaping, according to the hospital. There's a press conference Tuesday to discuss what happened and doctors will offer an update on the patient's condition. In the wake of these injuries, some states and cities have placed limits on sales of vaping products. Some stores, including Walgreens and Walmart, have also stopped selling vaping products. Until the public health investigation is complete, the CDC suggests people refrain from using all vaping products with THC, no matter where people buy them.

CNNARVIN, Calif. - A tip about supposedly legal hemp production led California investigators to fields of marijuana plants. The Kern County Sheriff's Office -- with the help of the FBI and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife -- executed search warrants on 11 fields in the Arvin area, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. From the 459 acres of land, authorities destroyed about 10 million marijuana plants --- a value of approximately $1 billion on the black market, the sheriff's office said. "These illicit marijuana gardens were grown under the guise of legitimate hemp production," the sheriff's office said. Tests showed THC levels in those fields were much higher than the legal limit, the sheriff's office said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies are now using new technology to identify illegal drugs. FHP has also recently stepped up their efforts, in helping troopers distinguish marijuana from hemp, during traffic stops. It allows troopers to identify suspected narcotics in packaging with laser technology, without troopers having to remove or disturb the substance. Test kits are also being developed to help local law enforcement identify the presence of THC in edibles, like gummy bears and brownies and cookies. The drawback right now is that the test kits on the market currently are extremely expensive.

(CNN) - The federal investigation into what exactly is causing a peculiar outbreak of vaping-related lung injuries nationwide could continue for months. Last week, the FDA warned consumers to stop using THC vaping products as investigations into vaping-related lung injuries and deaths continue. The CDC on Friday released updated guidance for health workers caring for people with vaping-related lung injuries. In the guidance, the CDC refers to the e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury by a new acronym, EVALI. Schuchat said on Friday that a "handful" of lung injury patients have been readmitted to hospitals from five to 55 days after they were discharged.

Hundreds more Americans have been reported to have a vaping-related breathing illness, and the death toll has risen to 12, health officials said Thursday. Those deaths now include one patient in Georgia and one in Florida. The person who died in Georgia had a history of heavy nicotine vaping but did not report a history of vaping THC, which was one commonality in some of the other vaping related deaths. Over the summer, health officials in a few states began noticing reports of people developing severe breathing illnesses, with the lungs apparently reacting to a caustic substance. Currently, health officials are advising people not to use any vaping product until the cause is better understood.

On Wednesday, the Georgia Department of Public Health also reported one death. The person in Georgia had a history of "heavy nicotine vaping," but did not report a history of vaping other substances, such as THC, the Georgia Department of Public Health announced on Wednesday. Gina Raimondo signed an executive order directing the state's health department to establish "emergency regulations" forbidding the sale of flavored vaping products in the state. Earlier this month, Michigan banned the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and New York banned most flavored e-cigarettes. On the national front, the FDA has been working on a compliance policy related to enforcing premarket authorization requirements for flavored e-cigarettes, excluding tobacco flavored.

Zirbel died after an agency motorcycle crashed into the trailer of a vehicle that pulled in front of him. Blood tests found Schioppa had no alcohol in his system, but there were traces of THC, the active ingredient of marijuana. "Thus, there is insufficient evidence to charge Steven Schioppa with DUI manslaughter," the FHP report concludes. Zirbel, a 12-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, was survived by a wife and son. The Sheriff's Office held a wreath-laying ceremony in his honor last month.

As more parents consume edibles, emergency rooms see more children exposed to marijuana. - When Massachusetts legalized marijuana, edibles immediately became a fan favorite. Doctors say calls to the state's poison control centers have doubled since marijuana was legalized. The emergency room at South Shore Hospital has seen a dramatic increase in pediatric cases, often because parents did not secure their edibles and kids ingested them. The Commission recently proposed draft regulations that marijuana products that appeal to children shall not be placed in a package easily opened with scissors.

Christopher Furlong/Getty ImagesMIAMI, Fla. - The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office will no longer prosecute minor cases involving marijuana, and police there will now be required to confirm suspected marijuana in felony cases with lab testing. Our sister station, Local10.com, reports the decision was announced Thursday in a memo sent to law enforcement agencies. Smelling or observing what officers suspect is cannabis will no longer be sufficient to establish probable cause of actually being cannabis, according to the memo. Hemp, which is similar to marijuana but does not contain THC, became legal in Florida in July. "There is no way to visually or microscopically distinguish hemp from marijuana."

We ask because these days, it seems to be everywhere: major companies are making and carrying CBD products, and its even showing up in beauty products, muscle rubs, supplements and food. Analysts project the CBD industry will be worth more than $20 billion by 2022, according to Time magazine. CBD and THC are both extracted from cannabis sativa, but they have different effects, McGeorge pointed out in a recent report. Experience and research with CBD is many decades behind compounds that were identified at a similar time. A 2017 study found that 26% and 43% of CBD products that were tested had lower and higher amounts of the compound, respectively, than were listed on their labels, the article said.

It seems that law enforcement is becoming more and more aware of the issue. Its hypersensitive breathalyzer could be used to help law enforcement officials keep impaired drivers off the road. “We have had a great deal of interest in our breathalyzer from law enforcement and employers in the U.S., and across the globe,” Hound Labs says online. ... We have tested versions of the Hound marijuana breathalyzer with law enforcement as part of the development of the tool. Multiple law enforcement agencies are planning to use our breathalyzer when it becomes available.”
