Deadly start to weekend on Clay County roads

Both crashes involved motorcycles


CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol is reporting two fatal motorcycle crashes in Clay County early Saturday morning.

The first crash happened before 1 a.m. on Wells Road at Eldrige Avenue, near the Holiday Inn in Orange Park. Westbound lanes were closed for hours as troopers worked to clear the scene.

Jason Platz, 40, of Jacksonville, was driving westbound on Wells Road when he lost control of his motorcycle and overturned, FHP said. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Investigators said Platz was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Before 5 a.m., another deadly crash involving a motorcycle happened in Keystone Heights on County Road 315C near Mendoz Trail.

Derrek Ray Meadows, 29, of Green Cove Springs, was driving northbound on CR-315C when he was thrown from his motorcycle after driving into a ditch, FHP said. 

Meadows was pronounced dead at the scene.
