FHP: 2 die when speeding motorcycle hits car in St. Johns County

Motorcyclist, driver killed in crash on SR 207 at Hastings Road

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Two men were killed Monday night when a motorcycle hit a Volkswagen Jetta on State Road 207 in St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said 24-year-old Oliver Rollins and 55-year old Steven Canard both died at the scene.

Rollins' motorcycle was speeding on SR 207 and T-boned Canard's Jetta as it was turning onto SR 207 from Hastings Road.

Rollins had been going about 100 mph, when he was thrown over the car and suffered a fatal head injury, according to troopers.

Canard's car overturned on its roof.

Nick Clifford witnessed the crash and told News4Jax that Rollins had been speeding back and forth on SR 207 several times Monday night.

"The guy on the motorcycle, he had no chance, no chance. The helmet was disintegrated," Clifford said.

Troopers said Canard was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown through the rear window of the car. He also died at the scene.

Clifford lives near where the crash happened and rushed over to try to help the men, but they were already dead, he said.

"My mind is trying to put me in shock, maybe to protect me or something," Clifford said. "I can barely remember what they were wearing. It's still hard to come to grips with."
