Man struck by car on Monument Road at I-295 dies at hospital

17-year-old in car behind crash jumped out and gave CPR until JFRD arrived

Police have identified an 80-year-old man hit by a car Monday afternoon on Monument Road near the Interstate 295 interchange.

Clarence Gibbs died at Memorial Hospital, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Traffic homicide Lt. Ricky Valentine said Gibbs was crossing the southbound lanes in front of Ruby Tuesday's restaurant at 3:20 p.m. One car slowed to avoid him, but a car in the next lane did not see the man in time and struck him.

"It was devastating to me," witness Aidan Foster told News4Jax. "Seeing that definitely broke my heart."

Police said Gibbs was not in a crosswalk when he was hit. Officers said the driver of the car that struck Gibbs, as well as the two passengers in that car, are cooperating.

Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane of Monument were blocked by the police investigation for more than an hour after the crash.

Valentine said he commended a 17-year-old who was riding in a car that was behind the vehicles involved. He got out to perform CPR until paramedics arrived.
