Universities, colleges cancel classes ahead of Hurricane Matthew

UF postpones Saturday's football game vs. LSU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida and Jacksonville University announced Wednesday that classes will be canceled because of Hurricane Matthew.

The University of Florida has canceled classes on Friday and announced Thursday that the Gators' football game against LSU Saturday in Gainesville has been postponed.

The universities and the SEC office will work to reschedule the game later in the 2016 season if possible.

South Carolina coach Will Muschamp also said his team's home game with Georgia has been moved from Saturday night to Sunday because of Hurricane Matthew.

UF's offices in Gainesville and Alachua County will also be closed Friday. 

Santa Fe College will close starting at 5 p.m. Thursday and remain closed through Sunday.

University of North Florida

The University of North Florida has decided to provide time for students to leave campus early and prepare for the approach of Hurricane Matthew.

All classes and student events that begin after 3 p.m. Wednesday have been canceled, university officials said.

Classes and student activities scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday have also been canceled.

Residential students are encouraged to leave campus if they have a safe place to travel to and stay. Limited food service operations will be available for students who remain on campus. The Osprey Shuttle will not run Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

UNF employees are allowed to leave campus at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Classes and business operations are expected to return to normal on Sunday.

Jacksonville University

In the interest of safety, and to allow for sufficient storm preparation for the potential effects of Hurricane Matthew in the area, JU is canceling all university activities as of 3 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, including but not limited to classes, sporting events, Admissions Open House, and Homecoming & Family Weekend.

More information about campus preparations will be available throughout the day Wednesday in emails to students, parents, faculty and staff. The next web update will be available by 3 p.m.

Florida State College at Jacksonville

All Duval and Nassau County campuses will close at 3 p.m. Wednesday and remain closed through the weekend, reopening Monday. They ask that all students and employees shut down computers before leaving. 

All scheduled events, including the JaxbyJax Sampler, TEDxFSCJ: Engage, International Observe the Moon Night, are canceled.

Edward Waters College

Edward Waters College will close the campus for all classes and other activities, beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday to resume classes and other activities on Monday.

All EWC employees are allowed to leave at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

All classes and business operations will return to normal at 8 a.m. Monday.

Other college closings

Due to Hurricane Matthew, ALL Nova Southeastern University campuses throughout Florida and Puerto Rico will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and re-open with normal operations on Monday.  For additional updates, please visit www.nova.edu/hurricane or call the NSU Emergency Hotline at 800-256-5065. 

NSU has campuses in Miami, Davie/Ft. Lauderdale, Miramar, Ft. Myers, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Keiser University’s Jacksonville campus will be closed at 1 p.m. on Thursday through Friday. Classes will resume on Monday. Students, staff, and faculty should visit www.keiseruniversity.edu or call the emergency hotline at 1-877-353-4737 for further updates. 

University of Phoenix North Florida campus will be closed Thursday and Friday. The campus will reopen Monday.

St. Johns River State College will close all campuses (Orange Park, St. Augustine and Palatka) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and will remain closed through Sunday. All classes and events scheduled for Wednesday evening, Thursday and Friday are canceled. All campuses will reopen Monday at regularly scheduled times.

Jones Technical Institute will closed Thursday and Friday.
