Sliced apples sold at McDonald's and Burger King are part of a nationwide recall. The apples may have been contaminated with listeria before being shipped all over the country.
No illnesses have been reported, but listeria was found on the equipment used to produce apple products by Missa Bay LLC, owned by Ready Pac Foods Inc. of Swedesboro, N.J.
Included in the recall, are some packaged fruit, veggies, salads and sandwiches containing apples distributed to Wawa convenience store and Wegman's grocery chains. Missa Bay is also recalling various apple and fruit snacks with "Ready Pac" labels and apple salad kits with a "Safeway Farms" label.
A total of 300,000 cases and 300,000 individually packaged apple slices were sent to 36 states -- including here in Florida and Georgia.
They have a use-by date of July 8 through Aug. 20.
People should check their refrigerators for products with those use-by dates. If you may have purchased the recalled products, you're asked to record use-by dates and UPC codes and contact Ready Pac at 800-800-7822.
Listeria can be deadly. Some of the symptoms include fever, nausea or diarrhea.
