Maine State Police say five people were shot and two were killed in a series of shootings by a convicted sex offender in northern Maine., WMTW reports.

State police said Anthony Lord, 35, was arrested in Houlton at about 2 p.m. Friday.

He is charged with two counts of murder and will face more charges, according to Maine State Police.

Police said the shootings happened in the Aroostook County towns of Benedicta and Silver Ridge and the Penobscot County town of Lee overnight Thursday into Friday.

Maine State Police said the incidents began at 8:30 p.m. Thursday when they believe Lord set fire to a barn in the town of Benedicta.

Investigators said at 4:40 a.m. Friday, Lord broke into a home in Silver Ridge Township and beat a man.

About 10 minutes later, shots were fired at Lord's brother's home in Benedicta.

At 5:15 a.m., a man and woman were shot in Benedicta. The man died, according to police.

Moments later a driver was shot but survived.

At 5:20 a.m., police sad East Millinocket spotted Lord. There was a chase and Lord fired at a cruiser.

An hour later, police said two men were shot at a wood lot in Lee. One of the men died of his wounds.

A woman who was being held by Lord was rescued safely.

The Maine Sex Offender Registry lists Lord as lifetime registrant for an unlawful sexual contact conviction.

State police had no information on the identities of the shooting victims.
