GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 61-year-old Alachua County man has been charged with elder abuse and domestic battery against his 78-year-old live-in, wheelchair-bound girlfriend, the Gainesville Police Department said.

David L. Jones was arrested Sunday morning and was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was booked into the Alachua County Jail with a $52,500 bond.

Jones is accused of physically abusing his girlfriend by punching her in the back of the head and pushing her out of her wheelchair onto the floor. Police said Jones also locked the refrigerator, depriving the victim of food and only allowing her to eat on his schedule.

According to police, Jones also prevented the victim from leaving the residence and confiscated and spent the victim's money.

A loaded .22-caliber firearm owned by Jones was found in the home, police said.
