AAA: Greater risk of injuries among children on Halloween

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The countdown to Halloween is on and News4JAX is committed to helping your family enjoy a safe holiday. 

AAA warns that kids and teens have a greater risk of being hurt on Halloween than any other day of the year. The CDC says children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other day of the year.

Here are things you can go over now to be ready next week:

• Parents, while you’re out with your little ones, make sure to avoid using your phone and updating social media until after you’re finished trick-or-treating.
• Walk door to door and show them safe places to cross the street. Have your trick-or-treaters carry a glow-stick of flash light so they can see and be seen.
• Drivers, be sure to avoid distractions and as always drive sober.
• You’ll want to drive slower than usual through neighborhoods to give you extra reaction time.
• AAA encourages turning your headlights on to make yourself more visible, even in the daylight hours.

If there are no sidewalks where you are trick-or-treating, always walk facing traffic and stay as far left as possible.
