Man shot by police, convicted of weapons charge now charged with murder

Dewayne Wimberly in court Friday making first appearance on murder charge.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police have charged Dewayne Wimberly, 33, with murder in the April 2015 shooting death of Troy Colton at a gas station on Raiford Street, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced Friday.

Witnesses identified Wimberly as the shooter and investigators determined that the shooting was payback for Colton having beaten up a friend of Wimberly’s, authorities said. Wimberly, who was wanted for questioning in a carjacking, was shot in the leg by a Jacksonville police officer 10 days later.
