IBS Awareness Month: How you can create a healthier and happier gut

Over the years social media has brought a heightened awareness to plight of people with tummy troubles, otherwise known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Carley Smith, a nutritional therapist, certified GAPS practitioner and registered yoga teacher, joined us on River City Live to share how understanding IBS is a way to up your gut health and live well.

Carley explained that gut health can be broken down a couple of different ways.

“You have your microbiome, which is that healthy collection of good bacteria and fungi in the gut, as well as a nice healed and sealed gut lining,” Carley said. “I make this analogy, the gut is like a garden hose, you want a nice healed lining. When there’s holes in the garden hose, you get water squirting out everywhere, it’s kind of the same thing going on in the gut.”

She said it’s important to be taking in nutrients that help maintain both a healthy microbiome and a healthy gut lining.

“The gut is like a thumbprint,” Carley said. “It’s completely unique to you. So you really want to work with someone that can help you navigate that process.”

Carley, AKA the Fairy Gutmother®, became interested in health and nutrition after being diagnosed with Lyme disease and using food as medicine emphasizing gut health to help heal.

She became so empowered in the progress of her healing just based on diet and lifestyle changes emphasizing gut health that she started her business, Fairy Gutmother®, so she could help others.
