ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Hundreds of bees had to be removed from the Bridge of Lions on Wednesday. Backyard Beekeepers called “Bee The Light” posted the gentle process of removing and relocating the insects. The beekeepers said there were less than 300 bees in the hive so the chances of them surviving on their own were slim. These bees will be mixed in with other hives and closely monitored to ensure their survival. Pollinators, most often honey bees, are responsible for one in every three bites of food we take, and increase our nation’s crop values each year by more than $15 billion.

On Tuesday, a News4Jax crew saw a swarm of bees flying and crawling outside the apartment. After News4Jax reported the issue, Jacksonville city code enforcement got involved. Right after the story was published, city code enforcement gave the property owners a warning citation and said the problem needed to be fixed. Bees inside the apartment. Bees inside the apartment. Prior to that professional assessment, Hodges said his daughter first noticed the bees flying from under her bed. Hodges said that although the place is very affordable for him and his family, if code enforcement deems the apartment to be unsafe, he will move out.
