Bartram Trail girls soccer team goes back to back with title game rout
Second in the rankings. The Bartram Trail girls soccer team went back to back, claiming their second consecutive Class 7A state championship with a 4-0 win over Cypress Bay on Friday at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand. Cypress Bay (8-1) has been blanked by the Bears (19-2) in the last two title games. Bartram beat the Lightning 5-0 last year to win the first championship in girls soccer history. When the Lightning managed to find a seam in the Bears defense, keeper Bailey Dean turned everything back that she saw.
St. Johns Country Day soccer teams making history together in run to state final
ORANGE PARK, Fla. โ It is a good time to be a St. Johns Country Day soccer fan. This week, both the boys and girls teams will be playing in DeLand in state championship games. The Spartans boys are in the state championship game for the first time. Under the current winter sports format, St. Johns Country Day has never won a boys soccer state championship. St. Johns has 12 state championships in program history and is quickly catching up to state leader St. Thomas Aquinasโ 15 titles.

High school soccer state semifinals: Four area teams headed to final
It was a tough night for area soccer teams in the state playoffs. With the exception of both the boys and girls teams at St. Johns Country Day, and a pair of St. Johns County powers, Bartram Trail and Ponte Vedra, the other four area teams bowed out in the state semifinals. The boys team blanked St. Edwardโs 4-0, and the girls dynasty routed Geneva 8-0. On the boys side, Bolles lost 8-1 to Tampa Catholic in Class 3A, and Tampa Jesuit beat Stanton 1-0 in 5A. Severe weather damages buildings, power lines in Central Florida
DELAND, Fla. โ Storms damaged buildings, power lines and cars Tuesday afternoon in Volusia County, with weather officials trying to confirm a possible tornado. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service told news outlets that it wasnโt immediately clear whether a tornado had touched down in DeLand. Forecasters said they detected what looked like a tornado on the radar, but they would survey the area Wednesday to confirm it. A tornado warning was issued around 4 p.m. Tuesday, and residents were urged to take shelter immediately. Shortly after the storm, DeLand officials posted photos of the damage on the cityโs official Twitter page.
Deputies hit by bottles at massive block party in Volusia County
DELAND, Fla. โ Deputies said they were hit with cups of alcohol, bottles and bar stools after they made arrests at a weekend block party involving thousands of party-goers, officials reported Monday. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office estimated 3,000 people were at the outdoor party spanning several locations in DeLand that started Saturday afternoon and lasted until early Sunday. A deputy injured his knee, and an police officer who was hit by a jar had a minor head injury, the sheriff's office said. A passenger in a vehicle pointed a rifle or shotgun in the direction of a deputy and pedestrians gathered at a gas station, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies were at the block party for crowd control and to keep cars from blocking traffic, not for enforcing social distancing as a result of the coronavirus, the sheriff's office said.
