TALLAHASSEE, Fla. About 60% of Florida households have responded to this years census, trailing 31 other states in response rates, according to information released by the U.S. Census Bureau. The national response rate was 63.1% as of Wednesday, while Florida was at 60.1%. In Florida, the highest response rate has been in Sumter County, at 69.8%. It was followed by Seminole County at 68.8%, St. Johns County at 68.7%, Hernando County at 68.3% and Brevard County at 68%, according to the Census Bureau. The Census Bureau said it will continue collecting data until Sept. 30.

Those tensions got international attention last weekend when President Donald Trump tweeted approvingly of a video showing one of his supporters at the retirement community chanting a racist slogan associated with white supremacists. Those tensions, though, flared two weeks ago during a golf-cart parade for President Donald Trump's birthday in which a man shouted, White Power, when confronted by anti-Trump protesters. A video clip of that confrontation in Americas largest retirement community was tweeted approvingly by Trump last weekend and then taken down. In the past, when conflicting political views came up in The Villages, residents said it was best to say, I disagree, and quickly change the topic. A man driving by in a golf car responded by shouting, White Power," a racist slogan associated with white supremacists.

Like many other Southern communities, it was run by whites until courts overturned Jim Crow laws and ordered desegregation during the civil rights era. At least two African American board members during that time say their employers received threatening letters, advocating they be fired. Under the Voting Rights Act, the countys plan previously would have been cleared in advance by the Justice Department to guarantee it didnt harm minorities. Alice Green, one of the two remaining African American board members, said she hopes the litigation ends soon.
