Lightning is unpredictable, deadly
Meteorologists can forecast the general conditions that cause lightning but no one can predict exactly when or where lightning will strike. Lightning strikes the ground about 25 million times each year and continues to be among the top weather-related killers in the United States. With an average of 1.2 million cloud- to-ground lightning strikes each year, no other state experiences more lightning strikes per square mile than Florida. Contrary to popular belief, lightning can strike the same place twice and rubber shoes or tires donโt protect you from lightning strikes. You can determine how far away a flash of lightning is by counting the number of seconds that pass after observing a lightning bolt.
Jacksonville airmen to be honored on 125th Fighter Wing Day
The City of Jacksonville is honoring the 125th Fighter Wing on Monday, 1-25, and the airmen of the Florida Air National Guard are beaming with pride and roaring with thunder. The 125th Fighter Wing is known as the Home of the Thunder and thatโs the sound you can expect. They didnโt really expect to have Jacksonville Mayor Curry proclaim Monday as 125th Fighter Wing Day honoring all the airmen assigned to 25 units and led from Jacksonville. Chief Beckom is the top enlisted member of the fighter wing and one of the top ambassadors. What would eventually be known as the 125th Fighter Wing was federally recognized in 1947 stationed at Jacksonvilleโs Imeson Field.
Mid-August starts a critical shift in Jacksonvilleโs weather pattern
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Letโs talk about Jacksonville before we talk about the heart of the current hurricane season. They have also been predominately during the early evening hours between 3-6 pm. The shift will be notable in about two weeks and it will coincide with the shift we will see in the hurricane season. Not withstanding this record breaking early hurricane season, the typical hurricane season doesnโt get interesting until about August 20th. Early season storms (especially pre-season storms) are typically remembered for their rain amounts, not for their destructive wind damage and killer storm surge.
