Family of man slain outside Westside convenience store speak

Sharad Dues shot, killed Sunday night at McDuff Food Mart

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Family members of the man slain outside of a Westside convenience store Sunday night are speaking out about the incident.

The devastated family members of Sharad Dues said they are remembering their joyful and family oriented son and brother. However, they do not believe justice has been served in full.

Just over 12 hours after 38-year-old Sharad Dues was shot and killed at the McDuff Food Mart, police charged 39-year-old Christopher Brown (pictured, below) with his murder.

Detectives said Dues had been in an argument with an unnamed woman earlier in the evening. That woman then went to Brown's house after the argument and then went to the store with Brown, where the two ran into the victim. That is when Brown shot Dues.

"It's always been Sharad, Damien, they've always been there for me, and I just feel like they took the a part," said sister Victoria Johnson.

Victoria broke down and said Sunday night when her family heard that their son, cousin and brother had been shot, their lives would never be the same.

"That's the part that I'm going to probably miss the most because I understood him more than most people would, and that hurts the most," said brother Damien Wise.

Dues left behind his 4-year-old son and a family with questions for the man who took their loved one's life and questions for police.

"My question to JSO: Why haven't y'all arrested the little girl who started this altercation?" said Dues' cousin, Sammie Green, "This little girl started this here and told my cousin before she walked off, 'I got something for you,' and 15 minutes later he was shot by the dude that she was in the car with. That is call accessory to murder you, so why is she not in the Duval County Jail tonight?"

The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office did clarify that to be an accessory to murder you have to be an active participant in the crime. In this particular case, since this woman did not leave with Brown, she was not seen as being an accessory. Police said they must have evidence that shows that she is an active participant.

The investigation is ongoing by the homicide unit.
