How does age play a role in breast cancer risk?
Read full article: How does age play a role in breast cancer risk? Many of us are aware that genetics can play a big role in the risk of getting breast cancer, but age is also a factor. Though breast cancer is far less common in men than women, age still plays a role, as the older he is, the more likely a man is to get breast cancer. For men, about half were diagnosed with breast cancer before age 67, and half after. Just like with women, men, too, are impacted by race and ethnicity when it comes to breast cancer diagnoses. Could the Fasting Mimicking Diet help some breast cancer patients?
Read full article: Could the Fasting Mimicking Diet help some breast cancer patients?A different kind of fasting is the Fasting Mimicking Diet, or FMD, as the experts at Ackerman Cancer Center said. One in eight women in America will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, the numbers from the American Cancer Society show. And just last month, Nature Communications published research from a randomized phase 2 trial that analyzed the impact of FMD in breast cancer patients under chemotherapy. Researchers found that FMD can sensitize breast cancer cells to chemotherapy both at the clinical and pathological levels. “Instead, fasting deprives proliferating cancer cells of nutrients, growth and other factors, which renders them more sensitive to cancer therapy and increases cell death."

Breast cancer early detection, beyond mammography: A closer look at all the other tests
Read full article: Breast cancer early detection, beyond mammography: A closer look at all the other testsThe short answer: All breast imaging tests are less than perfect, each breast imaging exam provides different information, and all breast imaging studies are complimentary. Upsides: Mammograms are the cornerstone, first-line screening tool for early breast cancer detection because they are a quick, cost-efficient way to get a global view of how the breast tissues are organized, and assess for any changes related to early breast cancer. Downsides: Mammograms are less sensitive in the detection of early breast cancer if a woman has dense breast tissue. Upsides: Breast MRI is the single-most sensitive and specific breast imaging test available for the detection of early breast cancer. By leveraging the strengths of multiple breast imaging modalities, breast imaging physicians provide patients with the most accurate evaluation possible to rule out the presence of early, curable breast cancer.

Understanding more about the duration of adjuvant hormonal therapy in breast cancer
Read full article: Understanding more about the duration of adjuvant hormonal therapy in breast cancerTwo years ago, a large Canadian study in breast cancer concluded that extending adjuvant hormonal treatment of breast cancer from 5 years to 10 years improved disease control for some patients – primarily post-menopausal women with high risk features. It has long been considered standard to use five years of treatment with anti-estrogen therapy. I would recommend a careful discussion of the risks and benefits of the duration of treatment with your physician. While hormone treatment is generally well tolerated, it was clear that there was difficulty in patients complying with the treatment for extended duration as well. In summary, it looks like 7 years is the maximum time for adjuvant hormonal therapy for post-menopausal women – good news for women with breast cancer.

What is breast density, and how does it impact cancer risk?
Read full article: What is breast density, and how does it impact cancer risk?Breast density - and perhaps more importantly, the ramifications of having dense breast tissue - can be confusing topics for both patients and providers. But understanding the concept of breast density is very important, because your breast density may influence your individual breast cancer screening plan. Breast density is important because women with dense breasts (higher proportion of glandular tissue compared to fat) have a higher risk of breast cancer compared to women with low breast density (mostly fat). Breast density is therefore considered an independent risk factor for breast cancer. For all women, though, the fundamental first steps toward developing a personalized breast cancer screening plan start with talking to your doctor about your individual breast cancer risk, and undergoing regular screening mammography.

Breast cancer patients find support online
Read full article: Breast cancer patients find support onlineThere was a time when a woman diagnosed with breast cancer depended on her circle of friends, family and work colleagues for emotional support. When a woman is newly diagnosed with breast cancer, she often seeks out online forums and discussion boards at cancer sites, like the Breast Cancer Site or Young Survival Coalition. The Breast Cancer Site page on Facebook has almost 250,000 fans. Dian, a radio journalist, uses her Facebook and Twitter pages to keep friends and family updated about the progress of her breast cancer treatment. Marie says she is careful to filter information about breast cancer to make sure it is substantiated.

Treatment plan should be based on specific type of breast cancer
Read full article: Treatment plan should be based on specific type of breast cancerThe main reason for the difference in survival rates is that breast cancer is not just one disease. Women and men with ER-positive breast cancer tend to have an initial lower risk of the cancer coming back after breast surgery compared with women whose tumors do not have estrogen receptors (known as ER-negative breast cancer). Information regarding a tumor's ER status is one of the most important factors that guide breast cancer treatment decisions. Another very important type of breast cancer is the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, or HER-2 amplified breast cancer subset. It is important for doctors to be able to identify and understand these and other specific subtypes of breast cancer.

Male patients fighting against breast cancer
Read full article: Male patients fighting against breast cancerAlthough male breast cancer accounts for only 1 percent of all breast cancer cases in the U.S., the incidence rate among males increased annually between 1975 and 2004. Because male breast cancer is so rare, delayed diagnosis often results in the disease proving more deadly for men. "I lost my father to male breast cancer because there wasn't sufficient awareness about how this disease impacts men," Nick said. "There is a tremendous need to increase male breast cancer awareness efforts across the country." That search was hard at times as information about male breast cancer was, and still can be, hard to come by.

Women with breast cancer who return to work should inform their health care providers so that treatments can be scheduled outside of working hours. Dian, a radio journalist, returned to work six weeks after undergoing surgery for breast cancer while still receiving chemotherapy and radiation. Barbara Hoffman, a founding chair of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, said, "Employment discrimination against cancer survivors has decreased. Also, attitudes about cancer exemplified by the use of terms such as cancer survivor and cancer survivorship have also helped to decrease workplace discrimination."

Friends' support can help cancer patients
Read full article: Friends' support can help cancer patientsOf course, relationships are affected during a disease as devastating as breast cancer, but we have some control over whether this effect is negative or positive. Breast cancer is one of the most commonly found types of cancer. A woman's concept of breast cancer may color all her interactions, making it difficult to relate normally. Breast cancer can also affect one's sense of identity. Continuing to be happy to see the person, and showing it, is important for the breast cancer patient to see in the faces of those around her.

Cancer patients at peace with having healthy breast removed
Read full article: Cancer patients at peace with having healthy breast removedBy Mayo Clinic News NetworkMore women with cancer in one breast are opting to have both breasts removed to reduce their risk of future cancer. Women with breast cancer have many decisions to make about their treatment, including the degree of surgery to have. Options include lumpectomy, followed by radiation; having one or both breasts removed; and if the choice is mastectomy, whether to have breast reconstruction. In the new study, Mayo researchers surveyed 621 women who had cancer in one breast and had family histories of breast cancer and chose double mastectomies. Seventy-three percent said they would make the same decision about whether to have breast reconstruction surgery or not.
