Park Service to burn 2-acre debris pile on Cumberland Island

CUMBERLAND ISLAND, Ga. – The National Park Service says coastal Georgia residents shouldn’t be alarmed if they soon see smoke rising from Cumberland Island. The Park Service said in a news release that the debris pile covers about 2 acres (0.8 hectares). Smoke will be visible for several days after the fire starts, the agency said, and the fire will be monitored continuously by Park Service firefighters. Cumberland Island has more than 9,800 acres (3965 hectares) of federally designated wilderness, making it a popular outdoor tourist destination in coastal Georgia.

’Give Them Space’: Critically endangered right whale calves spotted off Florida, Georgia coast

VILANO BEACH, Fla. – Some exciting news for right whale watchers! One calf was spotted near Cumberland Island with its mother on Friday while researchers surveyed them by plane. Researchers nicknamed her mother “Millipede.” She is 16 years old and this is her second known calf. The first live right whale calf of the season was spotted by biologists with @CMAquarium off Cumberland Island, GA December 4. Mom is known right whale ‘Chiminea.'

Scientists say 21 beached whales in Georgia, SC are from same pod

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Scientists say they have linked four pilot whales found dead on the coast of South Carolina with 17 whales of the same species that died days earlier after beaching themselves in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Monday that photographs of dorsal fins confirmed the 21 dead whales belonged to the same pod. Four more dead whales were found Saturday on and near Edisto Beach, South Carolina - about 80 miles (128 kilometers) from the stranding site in Georgia. The Navy confirmed that sonar was not the cause of the beached whales near St. Catherines Island last week. The American Cetacean Society says pilot whales are often involved in mass strandings partly due to their social nature.

National Park Service celebrates 103rd birthday Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The National Park Service celebrate its 103rd birthday Sunday by offering free park entry. National parks across the country like Arizona's Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park and the Florida Everglades are waiving admission fees to invite more visitors to join the celebration. President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Park Service Act on Aug.25,1916. The National Park Service Act of 1916 is a federal law that established the National Park Service as an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior. The act declared that the fundamental purpose of the national park system was to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects, as well as the wildlife therein.

The Dolphin crew hoisted the man and transported him to UF Health Jacksonville after he was found unresponsiveJACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coast Guard transported a man found unresponsive on a boat off the coast of Cumberland Island, Georgia, to a hospital Saturday, authorities said. Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville received a report about 10:10 a.m. from a good Samaritan who found an unresponsive man aboard another vessel about 12 miles east of Cumberland Island. According to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, the man was identified as Chuck Dopson, 55, of Yulee. The Coast Guard said he was alone and either had a heart attack or was shocked.

Crews began towing the vessel and then handed it off to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, which continued to tow it to Dee Dee Bartels Public Boat Ramp.
