Struggling students could see book deliveries
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. โ A priority of House Speaker Chris Sprowls that would lead to books being delivered to the homes of struggling elementary school readers got unanimous approval Thursday from a House panel. โIn the essence of this bill, we certainly want our children to read on grade-level, we want them to be successful students and adults. But more importantly, we want them to be excited about reading,โ Trabulsy said during Thursdayโs meeting of the House Early Learning & Elementary Education Subcommittee. AdThe most recent data on English Language Arts assessments, recorded during the 2018-2019 school year, showed 43% of third-grade students were reading below grade level. To choose a distributor for delivering books, Trabulsy said the Department of Education or third-party administrator will publish a request for bids.
Why oak mulch could save your citrus from greening disease
It was part of a chain of events that sparked research into using oak mulch to combat citrus disease, and the results are helping trees survive. Researchers rented a wood chipper to make oak mulch in Ft. Pierce after hurricane damage. (Indian River Research and Education Center)Scientists have been looking for ways to help Florida citrus growers fight the most severe citrus disease in history and the solution may be to spread oak mulch around the drip line of citrus trees. Months of data showed oak amendments improved the soil and that the compounds in the mulch help citrus trees weather the disease. In the meantime, if you have any fallen oak trees, you may want to find a wood shredder and chip away for more fruitful days ahead.
