KYW via CNN(CNN) - A 10-year-old boy walking home from school in Philadelphia was critically injured Wednesday when he was shot in the back of the head by a stray bullet, according to police. Philadelphia police said a man involved in the shooting has been arrested, but the gunman remains on the loose, CNN affiliate KYW reported. "He tries to cover the kid and protect the kid, but the kid takes a shot," Philadelphia Police Capt. The shooting comes just weeks after a 2-year-old girl was killed and an 11-month old critically wounded in two separate shootings. So far this year, there have been more than 300 homicide victims in Philadelphia, according to statistics by Philadelphia police.
Toddler dies inside hot car in New Jersey
KYW via CNN(CNN) - A 22-month-old girl has died after she was found unresponsive in a van outside a commuter rail station in Lindenwold, New Jersey, prosecutors said. A 911 call at about 3:38 p.m. Friday reported a child inside a van at the PATCO High Speed Line, according to a press release from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Police arrived and found the girl unresponsive in her car seat and the passenger window broken, authorities said. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time, the prosecutor's office said. Another 26% of children die after entering a vehicle on their own, and about 19% are left there intentionally.
Philadelphia gunman in custody after hours-long standoff
KYWPHILADELPHIA - A gunman who opened fire on police Wednesday as they were serving a drug warrant in Philadelphia, wounding six officers and triggering a standoff that extended into the night, is in police custody, authorities said. Eric Gripp said early Thursday morning that the man was taken into custody after an hourslong standoff with police. Three people who officers had taken into custody in the house before the shooting started were also safely evacuated, police said. "We're doing everything within our power to get him to come out," Ross said during the standoff. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said its agents responded to the scene to assist Philadelphia police.
