New lane closures on County Road 220 that links Fleming Island and Middleburg went into effect this week, worsening a yearslong traffic backlog that drivers say has become intolerable.

The Florida Department of Transportation said the stretch from Blanding Boulevard to U.S. 17 will help alleviate daily congestion on major roadways, including Blanding Boulevard, U.S. 17, State Road 16, County Road 220, Henley Road, Sandridge Road, Russell Road and County Road 218.

There is one project in particular that is getting a lot of attention. It is on County Road 220 near Knight Boxx Road. A brand-new bridge is being installed to replace an old that is deteriorating.

Lake Asbury is one of the fastest-growing areas of Clay County, and the county’s growth has been coupled with various road projects that have frustrated thousands of residents over the past few years. However, a recent plan expected to improve “connectivity between adjacent developments” in the county was recently withdrawn.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. - The Clay County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man wanted for assault. Deputies are looking for Cainan James Thomas, who was last seen on foot headed toward the Armstrong Park area near County Road 220, deputies said.
