The Glynn County Health Department is urging St. Simons Island residents to remain cautious after a raccoon tested positive for rabies.

The Glynn County Health Department will offer the updated Pfizer COVID vaccine starting Monday, Oct. 2 for everyone aged 6 months and older.

The Glynn County Health Department is offering a drive-thru flu vaccination clinic on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the front parking lot of the clinic at 2747 Fourth St. No appointment is needed.

A feral cat from the central Cate Road area near Brunswick has tested positive for rabies, the Glynn County Health Department said Wednesday.

A feral cat on the south end of St. Simons Island tested positive for rabies after acting aggressively toward a family dog on Tuesday, according to the Glynn County Health Department. The dog is up to date on rabies vaccinations and was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment.

A mosquito sample collected from downtown Brunswick tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to a news release Monday from the Glynn County Health Department.

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. – The Glynn County Health Department’s COVD-19 testing hours will change, beginning Monday, Oct. 5. “We’ve refined and streamlined our specimen collection process over the past several months, and we can move people quickly through the testing site,” said Adam Sanchez, nurse manager of the Glynn County Health Department. “Reducing our testing site hours will allow staff to focus on other health department services while still meeting the demand for COVID-19 testing. According to the health department, if you believe you’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19, remember to quarantine at home for 14 days and schedule an appointment for testing around the 10th day. The Glynn County Health Department next week will offer no-cost vision, hearing dental and nutrition screenings for students. Students entering a Georgia school for the first time -- no matter what grade level -- must have a completed Certificate of Vision, Hearing, Dental, and Nutrition screening form. The Glynn County Health Department will offer those screenings to Glynn County students at no cost Aug. 10-14 Normally, a $30 fee applies when getting the screening at the health department. Screenings at the health department, located at 2747 Fourth Street in Brunswick, are by appointment only. The HPV vaccine is also recommended for both girls and boys starting at ages 1112 to protect against cancers and other diseases caused by human papillomavirus.

Immunizations and health screenings are an important part of keeping children healthy, and the health departments in Glynn and Camden counties are offering appointments now. Several vaccinations are required for school-aged children, and parents are urged not to delay those immunizations. Both the Glynn County Health Department and Camden County Health Department currently require appointments for services. The entrance to the health department for those seeking health department services, including vaccinations, is in a different location from the drive-through COVID-19 testing site. In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Glynn County Health Department's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) is partnering with the Southeast Georgia Health System Breast Care Center's Mobile Mammography Program to offer free mammograms from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The screenings will be at the Sparrow's Nest located at 2911 Altama Ave. in Brunswick. Women who meet certain annual income guidelines and are 40-64 years of age without insurance will be eligible to receive a screening mammogram at no cost. Getting vaccinated is the best protection against flu and the Glynn County Health Department now has flu vaccine available. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over 6 months of age, including pregnant women. The one thing that remains constant is the fact that influenza can be dangerous," said Coastal Health District Health Director Dr. Lawton Davis. It takes about two weeks after getting a flu shot for the vaccine to provide the body with protection against the flu. While getting the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu, there are other things we can all do every day to prevent getting or spreading the flu:Avoid close contact with sick people.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Glynn County Health Department has lifted the latest advisory for East Beach at the old Coast Guard station (10th Street East to Driftwood Drive) and Massengale Park Beach (Driftwood Drive to Cedar Street) on St. Simons Island. Water samples are tested only for enterococcus bacteria, which is found in warm blooded animals including humans, but also birds, raccoons, deer, dolphins and other wildlife. When a beach is under advisory, it means that the level of bacteria found in the water is above the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended standards. Subsequent water samples taken showed that the bacteria levels had dropped below EPA recommended limits, allowing the advisory to be lifted.
