Volunteers with HabiJax were in the Long Branch neighborhood throughout the week as construction of five new houses continued. It is a part the program’s annual Leaders Week and the national “Home is the Key” campaign.

Just a week before Christmas, the home-building process officially began for five homes that will soon be dedicated to veterans and military-connected families in Northwest Jacksonville.

Other builders participating in this project include Dream Finders Homes, Dostie Homes, Encore Homes of North Florida, New Atlantic Builders, Providence Homes by Bill Cellar, Pulte Group, and TerraWise Homes. The community is made possible by a grant from the Delores Barr Weaver HabiJax Tiny House Fund at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida. Walker said this new project is bringing attention to the affordable housing crisis in Duval County.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville Inc., also known as HabiJax, announced plans to build its first community of tiny houses. The 50, 500-square-foot houses will be on Navaho Avenue in Jacksonville’s Lackawanna neighborhood. The community is funded by the Delores Barr Weaver HabiJax Tiny House Fund at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida as part of her vision to create a new era of affordable housing in Jacksonville. “I have long been intrigued by tiny houses and glad this concept will answer one piece of the affordable housing crisis Jacksonville faces. “HabiJax is thrilled to be a part of this amazing new venture,” said Mary Kay O’Rourke of HabiJax.
