Storms move offshore in GA but continue to push east across NE FL
The Weather Authority is keeping a close eye on a line of thunderstorms just to the west of the I-75 corridor where a severe thunderstorms warning has been issued for Hamilton, Suwannee, and Clinch County until 3:00 PM EDT. These storms have a history on strong winds and hail.
Driftwood Beach among ‘Best Beaches in America’
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Driftwood Beach in Georgia is among the best beaches in the country, according to a new report. The location made #11 in the “Top 25 Beaches in the United States,” according to TripAdvisor. Last year, St. Augustine Beach made the list, but the local beach came up short this year. Golden Ray leaking petroleum product as third cut of cargo ship begins
The Riverkeeper says about 44,000 gallons of petroleum product are aboard the Golden Ray. Around Driftwood Beach, Inman found several pieces of debris, including bumper parts, melted plastic and pieces of fiberglass. Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival canceled for 2020
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. Citing public health concerns in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jekyll Island Authority announced this week that the 2020 Shrimp & Grits Festival has been canceled for November. Canceling this years festival was not an easy decision to make, but ultimately we, the JIA, felt it was in the best interest of both participants and those who work so hard to bring the festival to life, said Jones Hooks, Executive Director of the Jekyll Island Authority. To ensure island management is properly sustained, we too have to focus our efforts on rebuilding lost revenue and not overspending. The festival is slated to return Nov. 5-7, 2021, to continue the celebration of shrimp & grits and the dishs longstanding connection to the south, organizers said. The Shrimp & Grits Festival, three times voted Best Festival in the Southeast (2012, 2017 & 2019) by the Southeast Festivals & Events Association, brings more than 45,000 people to Jekyll Island over a three-day weekend.
Report lists St. Simons & Jekyll beaches among filthiest in the nation
GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. - Glynn County is known for its beautiful beaches, but a new report reveals the water at some of those beaches may be unsafe for swimming. "Bacteria testing of ocean and Great Lakes beaches in every region of the country revealed days ofpotentially unsafe fecal contamination in 2018," the report says. Another beach in Glynn County on the list, which many people go to for vacations and photo shoots, was Jekyll Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island. The health advisories were for the 5th Street Crossover Beach and South Beach at the Lighthouse, which stretch from Cedar Street to the pier on St. Simons Island, and Driftwood Beach, from beach kilometer marker 1 to Tallu Fish Lane on Jekyll Island. The Walking Dead Season 10 trailer features scenes on Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island. It appears the popular beach was utilized to act out a fighting scene and more in the upcoming season. A shipwreck was also spotted during the trailer. In the new season, the gang returns to the community of Oceanside. Driftwood Beach was also featured during Season 7.
