(AP Photo/Michael Sohn)BERLIN – Nine years late and far above its original budget, Berlin's new airport finally opened on Saturday with little fanfare as the aviation industry struggles with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Construction of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt, named after the former West German chancellor though better known as BER, started in 2006 and it was initially slated to open in October 2011. “Finally we can put our airport into operation — finally,” airport CEO Engelbert Luetke Daldrup said at a brief opening ceremony with national and regional officials. The opening of the new airport's Terminal 2 has been delayed until early next year because it isn't currently needed.
Jacksonville airports preparing for influx of visitors the week of RNC
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tens of thousands of people will be heading into Jacksonville in less than two months for the Republican National Conventions. It could seem like a long way away, but it’s just around the corner for Jacksonville Aviation Authority officials. It didn’t specify the number of people expected, but it’s freeing up 4 of its airports to accommodate travelers. TSA releases list of airports where dozens of screeners tested positive for coronavirus
The Transportation Security Administration released a list and map of airports where employees tested positive for coronavirus in the last two weeks. The information released Sunday shows 61 screening officers tested positive for COVID-19. An additional 22 non-screening employees tested positive for the virus over the same period. TSA did not provide recommendations for what people should do if they traveled through the affected airports during the dates indicated. According to the TSA’s latest checkpoint travel numbers, 203,858 people were screened at checkpoints across the country on March 26.
Mastermind in multimillion-dollar prostitution operation caught in Florida airport
TAMPA, Fla – A Colorado woman and an Israeli man are charged with laundering millions of dollars that U.S. prosecutors say came from a high-end prostitution operation they ran for years. Izhak Cohen, 53, was arrested in Hadera, Israel, and prosecutors will seek his extradition to the U.S., according to the statement. Reynolds and Cohen started VIP Escorts in 2012, according to prosecutors. They are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and two counts of money laundering. It is not clear whether she or Cohen have attorneys representing them who can speak on their behalf.
