LAKE CITY, Fla. – Columbia County Schools announced Thursday that added security will be in place “for some of our schools” after the district consulted with the Sheriff’s Office following a deadly shooting of a Columbia High School student. Dionne Leslie, a 17-year-old sophomore at Columbia High, was killed and another juvenile was wounded in a shooting in a Lake City neighborhood. The district said the Sheriff’s Office does not believe the schools are in danger, but the security is being added as a precaution as the investigation continues. Clayton Hopkins (Provided by Columbia County Sheriff's Office)Deputies said they’re also seeking information about an ATV, which they say was being operated nearby at the time of the shooting. People can also submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers of Columbia County.

Defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan signed a contract with Jacksonville on Monday morning, adding some much-needed reinforcements on a line that has been strafed with personnel losses. Jernigan played high school football at Columbia High School in Lake City under coach Craig Howard and the former four- and five-star player was one of the highest recruited players from the school. He signed with Florida State and played three seasons with the Seminoles before leaving early for the NFL draft. Jernigan joins Oakleaf High graduate Shaquille Quarterman as players who played their high school football in town to land with the Jaguars this season.

Until these numbers come down, Im not gonna feel comfortable, said Columbia High School football coach Brian Allen. The Florida High School Athletic Association voted last night during a five-hour emergency board meeting that fall sports can begin practicing as scheduled, even as coronavirus cases spike in Florida. Some coaches are worried about an outbreak snd they say this isnt an even playing field. Schools in hot zones, like Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami, are at a disadvantage over rural campuses.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. - A Columbia High School teacher accused of bullying students has resigned as cross-country coach and is under investigation by the Columbia County School District. School district Superintendent Lex Carswell confirmed to News4Jax the district is investigating the bullying allegations against Shelli Shoup brought forward by former students at a school board meeting last month. The students said they were harassed throughout high school, an experience that made their lives miserable. When the investigation is complete, which is expected by Friday, the school district will send its findings to the Florida Department of Education. Shoup has been a teacher at the school for more than 20 years.

This case involves a teacher who is accused of bullying students. The Columbia County School Board heard complaints Tuesday by former students from Columbia High School who said they were bullied by an unnamed teacher throughout high school, an experience that made their lives miserable. It sticks with you psychologically and makes you question, you know, am I worth it to the people around me? Calzada told the School Board.
