Traffic improvements planned for Oakleaf roundabout after children hit by cars
Multiple parents in Oakleaf are speaking out after numerous children have been hit by cars at the intersections around the large roundabout thatโs located near Oakleaf High School and Plantation Oaks Elementary School. And Clay County officials are taking action following outcry from parents and inquiries from News4Jax.
Clay County Schools has plan to alleviate crowding at Oakleaf High
CLAY COUNTY, Fla. โ Hundreds of families in Clay County will likely be sending their children to different schools next year as the district wrestles with overcrowding and lays out its redistricting plan. Currently, the top priority is relocating students from Oakleaf High School to Ridgeview High, followed by students in Lake Asbury and Middleburg. Clay parent wants answers after student exposed to COVID-19 on first day of school
CLAY COUNTY, Fla. โ An Oakleaf High School freshman told News4Jax her first day of classes went pretty smoothly. She didnโt realize until later that her first day inside the school would also likely be her last as a freshman. โIt was scary for us, and it was also upsetting because the school never contacted us.โAs of Thursday, the Clay County school district was the only large Jacksonville-area school district not publicly disclosing COVID-19 data for students. The Duval County school district has a school-by-school breakdown of COVID-19 cases. The Nassau County School District is posting reported cases to its website.
Football players get back to work and school in Clay County
Tuesday was also the first day of school in Clay County and at Oakleaf High School, coach Frank Garis said he knew his guys would be excited for practice this afternoon. Yesterday, the first day is always hectic, but it is good to have the kids around. I think the kids are excited [to be back in class] but more excited today because they are back in school and seen some people they havent seen in five or six months. The Knights, just like many other high school football teams here in Florida were permitted to begin holding their first practices of the year on Monday. With such a short time frame to prepare for their first game, Garis said he wants to keep things simple for his players.
Jaeda McFarland honored as All-Star Athlete
Jaeda McFarland is on the softball team at Oakleaf High School. Jaeda broke the school home run record last year as a junior and has signed to play Division 1 softball for the University of Maryland. She is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, the National Technical Honor Society and Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. Jaeda has volunteered at Elevate Church and has contributed to several fundraisers held for Oakleaf High School. She currently has a 4.2 GPA.

Oakleaf High senior's surgery successful after crash that killed friend
ORANGE PARK, Fla. - The family of an Oakleaf High School senior who was involved in a serious crash said a surgery on the 18-year-old's right leg was successful. After the crash, Richey has undergone five surgeries to date: one to amputate his left leg and several more to save his right leg. It was almost like an eight-hour surgery on his right leg. It was touch and go with the right leg," Elder said. They had to take muscle from his left side and skin from his thigh to actually fix the hole in the right leg," Elder said.

Students and staff at Oakleaf High School helped pack donations for Bahamas relief Friday, trying to help those devastated by Hurricane Dorian. Their efforts started five days ago with a simple post to social media asking for supplies for Student Ambassadors for Bahamas Relief. Throughout the week they've received water, food, clothes, flood buckets and much more. "There's still more help needed," said Sonia Belgrave, math specialist at Oakleaf High School. The school has partnered with Sysco International Food Group during the donation process and the company has paid some of the expenses for several donations.
Oakleaf High student to undergo another surgery after deadly crash
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A criminal investigation is still underway into a deadly crash last month near Oakleaf High School, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office confirmed. She is the mother of 18-year-old Tajuan Richey, who was one of the teenage boys injured in the crash. Elder said her son will likely be transferred to a hospital in Gainesville for the other surgery. Elder said her son has started to talk about the crash is starting to talk about the crash that left his best friend, Moss, dead. But with the upcoming transfer to a new hospital and another surgery, according to Elder, there's a long way to go.

Family, classmates mourn Oakleaf High student killed in crash
Keondre Moss was a junior at Oakleaf High School, where students were in mourning Tuesday. Part of a tree, car debris and a growing memorial is all that's left behind at the crash site. "We are deeply saddened to learn that a junior at Oakleaf High School has passed away due to a car accident in the Oakleaf community Monday afternoon. The District will provide grief counseling services at Oakleaf High School to support students, staff and family members during this very difficult time. There will be a balloon release for Keondre at Oakleaf High at 6:45 p.m. Friday before the homecoming game.
Oakleaf Knights beat Fletcher, claim crown
Just three years removed from a winless season in 2011, the Knights defeated visiting Fletcher 28-7 Friday night to finish undefeated in District 3-7A and claim the program's first district title. Johnson tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to junior Marcus Johnson in the second quarter to tie the game at 7. In the second quarter, Jordan Johnson powered in on a QB sneak to pad Oakleaf's lead to 21-7. Jordan Johnson finished 15 of 26 for 242 yards, and Marcus Johnson had seven catches for 119 yards. Senior Sean Pruitt added some cushion for the Knights with another pick 6 late in the fourth quarter.
