Tornado watch for NE Florida, SE Georgia expires
The tornado watch has been canceled in the Georgia counties of Brantley, Camden, Charlton and Glynn. The tornado watch continues until 6 p.m. in the Florida counties of Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Gilchrist, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns and Union. The National Weather Service has canceled a tornado warning for Clay and Duval counties. The watch continues for Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns and Union counties in Georgia. Firefighters rescue goat from Alachua County sinkhole
Firefighters from High Springs and Alachua County rescued a baby goat that got trapped Monday afternoon in a sinkhole on property on Northwest 268th Street. The Fire Department said the 9-week-old goat had fallen into a 40- to 50-foot hole. Rescue personnel arrived about 5 p.m. and spent two hours developing a plan to keep both the firefighter and the goat safe. Once all systems were in place, it took only 11 minutes for High Springs Lt. Kevin Pearson to retrieve the baby goat which, was then reunited with its mother. The Fire Department said the timing of Mondayโs event was perfect, as firefighters from both agencies are in a week-long rescue class being held in High Springs.
Woman killed in 3-vehicle crash involving Columbia County deputy
HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. โ A woman died Friday evening after a crash involving a Columbia County Sheriffโs Office vehicle and two other cars, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. According to the Columbia County Sheriffโs Office, the deputy was headed home in his agency patrol car when the crash occurred. An infant and 9-year-old girl who were in her car suffered minor injuries. The deputy and a third driver, along with a 12-year-old boy, also suffered minor injuries and were treated at the Lake City Medical Center. The Columbia County Sheriffโs Office released a statement Saturday about the crash, saying in part:โThe Florida Highway Patrol is conducting an independent traffic crash investigation.

Father of 6 facing child abuse, neglect charges
HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. โ A judge has denied bond for a father of six children who was arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse and child neglect resulting in great bodily harm. The arrest report states that on Sept. 7, a doctor at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville reported a suspicion of child abuse when Langford and the babyโs mother could not explain how the child got injured. The doctor said the injury to the babyโs arm appeared to be the result of the arm being twisted. The report states that the babyโs mother was holding the child when its arm appeared to go limp. Investigators said they had enough probable cause to arrest and charge Langford with aggravated child abuse and child neglect with great bodily harm.
70-year-old pedestrian killed in crash involving semitruck
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. - A 70-year-old Fort White man was killed Tuesday morning when he was hit by a semitruck in High Springs, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The man was struck around 10:30 a.m. on U.S. 441 near Northwest 202nd Street. Troopers said Joseph Mitchell was struck when he entered the northbound lanes of the highway. It's unclear why Mitchell was in the road, troopers said. The driver of the semitruck was not injured.
