The best new hurricane model you may not know about
HAFS was the most accurate model to predict Cat 5 Hurricane Dorian as it hit the Bahamas Sept 2019. This model is still in development but took top place for track accuracy during the 2019 hurricane season, according to hurricane scientists at NOAAโs Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). The regional and global HAFS had lower track errors during the 2019 hurricane season compared to other NOAA models. In cases like Hurricane Dorian, the regional HAFS track outperformed the GFS, HWRF and HMON. AdHAFS never predicted hurricane Dorian to hit Florida while the GFS (A), HWRF (B), and HMON (C) all did.

Isaias regains hurricane force just offshore of South Carolina
The Hurricane Center said it expected the storm to make landfall early Tuesday near southern North Carolina. Still, on this part of the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts that has been affected to varying degrees by seven tropical storms or hurricanes since 2014, residents weren't panicking. Up the coast in southern North Carolina, high winds from Isaiasโ inner core knocked down trees and power lines, blocking roads. Wayne Stanley and his family came to the city over the weekend from Julian, North Carolina. Farther up the coast into North Carolina, the hurricane center predicted storm surges of 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 meters) when Isaias moves onshore.

Ron DeSantis issued state of emergency orders Friday for all counties on Floridaโs Atlantic coast -- from the Keys to Nassau County -- as Hurricane Isaias drenched the Bahamas and remained on a track for at least a brush with Florida. โOur sites, because theyโre outdoors with tents, if it were to get 40-, 50-mile-per-hour winds, it would just collapse,โ he said. Mayor Carlos Gimenez said the county has 20 evacuation centers on standby that could be set up with COVID-19 safety measures. โWe still donโt think there is a need to open shelters for this storm but they are ready,โ he said. Isaias had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph on Friday and it was expected to remain a hurricane through Sunday as it moves north along or just off the Florida coast according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Dorianโs threat dominated hurricane season in Florida
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. โ For Florida, the 2019 hurricane season will be remembered for a gigantic, nerve-racking scare over the Labor Day weekend. But Florida avoided a strike in September from Hurricane Dorian after the mega-storm devastated parts of the Bahamas. And with the Sunshine State still recovering from Hurricane Michael in 2018 and Hurricane Irma in 2017, this yearโs season was more psychologically challenging than physically taxing for Floridians. By comparison, Hurricane Michael caused an estimated $7.4 billion in insured losses when it slammed into Northwest Florida in 2018. Otherwise, the six-month 2019 hurricane season had the smallest impact on Florida in four years.

Bahamas schools damaged by hurricane
Water, water everywhere. Public schools in undamaged areas, such as Nassau, re-opened Sept. 9, and some private schools across the islands reopened last week for the start of their school year. At least five private schools were among the first on Grand Bahama to reopen after the storm. On South Abaco, which escaped the worst of the hurricane, Moore's Island Public School and Crossing Rocks Primary School reopened. Henfield, the first-grade teacher, has no answer for frustrated parents who want to know when public schools on the island might reopen their doors.

Homemade machine to bring endless fresh water to the Bahamas
FLINT, Mich. - He designed a machine that makes water from the air. Now, after Hurricane Dorian, he's trying to bring it to the Bahamas. Moses West, of San Antonio, Texas, has brought water to Flint, Michigan, and Puerto Rico -- all through his Atmospheric Water Generation machines, which extract moisture from the atmosphere and turn it into water. "This is a long-term recovery for the people there, and one of the stresses that they do not need to have is a lack of clean water," West told CNN affiliate KXAN. One issue is that West currently can't afford to leave his generators where they are permanently, so going to the Bahamas means leaving Flint.
