CANTON, Mass – Dunkin’ is permanently closing about 800 locations across the country. That’s eight percent of its restaurants. The company detailed the changes in its quarterly earnings report thursday, CNN Business reports. The company described the closures as “real estate portfolio rationalizations.”It also said it may permanently close about 350 locations outside of the U.S.

The company was forced to close stores on March 18 because of the coronavirus outbreak, causing sales to plunge by as much as 45%, the company said Thursday. Kohl's said earlier this week that sales fell 43% last quarter, while sales at L Brands, the parent company of Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works, dropped 37%. Macy's began reopening stores on May 4 -- just a couple days after its first fiscal quarter came to a close. Macy's is limiting the number of customers allowed inside stores that are reopening and installing social distancing signs and markers. The company says it’s working: “With two weeks of results from reopened stores, customer demand is moderately higher than we anticipated,” Gennette said.

The chain’s parent company announced Monday that 57 of its restaurants will permanently shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. The commission filing didn’t name which locations were affected. Steak ‘N Shake started 2020 with 553 restaurants, while last year it had 624. Most of its restaurants were shuttered during the pandemic, while others will have drive-thru service.

Sweet Tomatoes, also known at Soup Plantation in other parts of the U.S., is closing all of its restaurants permanently, according to the San Diego Tribune. The self-service eatery will close all 97 restaurants it announced Thursday, WKMG reports. San Diego based Garden Fresh Restaurants, which owns Sweet Tomatoes, has been trying to salvage its operations but the coronavirus pandemic took its toll on the buffet-style eatery as the FDA put out recommendations to discontinue this style of serving. And I’m not sure the health departments are ever going to allow it. Sweet Tomatoes opened its first store in Florida in 1990 in Palm Harbor.
