Historic Springfield’s porches decked out for Halloween
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Halloween is right around the corner and it will look different this year due to the pandemic. Jacksonville’s historic Springfield neighborhood is celebrating the holiday by highlighting one of the area’s signature staples while remaining socially distant. RELATED: Vote for Jacksonville’s best holiday event | Vote for Jacksonville’s best light display“We have over 50 porches that have decorated for the holiday," Kelly Rich, executive director of Springfield Preservation and Revitalization, said. “We’ve actually partnered up with Visit Jax who’s put it on one of their tour maps, that’s on their website or app. So, it’s built for safe social distancing.”Springfield’s Halloween Porch Decorating Contest is a safe, free and creative way for families to celebrate the season, according to the neighborhood council.
Springfield Scoops opens in thriving Historic Springfield neighborhood
It’s a steep economic toll, but Historic Springfield in Jacksonville is beating the pandemic one new business at a time. Springfield Scoops is the newest business on the bustling block in historic Springfield. We haven’t lost a single business in historic Springfield due to COVID,” said Kelly Rich, executive director of the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization nonprofit organization. While the scoops are delicious, Springfield Scoops Owner Danielle McQueen said representation is even sweeter. In addition to this new business, Historic Springfield will start looking into adding more neighborhood amenities, as well as the Springfield lofts, which will include 78 multi-family units.
Springfield residents host porch decorating contest while families are quarantined at home
Jacksonville’s Historic Springfield neighborhood held a “porch decorating contest” to distract families from the anxiety and stress from quarantining at home. The new strand of coronavirus has left many people anxious, so some residents came together to bring this idea to life! Kat Ott, a Springfield resident that helped make the contest come together, told News4Jax that 40 porches participated. “My friend, Leah Rose, and I asked neighbors to decorate their porches with what they had on hand, any theme they wanted!” Ott said. "We had about 40 porches participate and they will decorations up for a while I imagine.
