JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The 2021 VyStar Duval County Teacher of the Year got another surprise on Tuesday when members of The Players organization stopped by his school. Jim Schmitt, who teaches history and global perspectives and research at Mandarin High School, is a huge golf fan. So a group from The Players Championship stopped by the school Tuesday morning to give Schmitt a gift basket, which included two tickets to this year’s sold-out Players Championship! Throughout his career, he has excelled as a teacher leader, developing a writing program for at-risk students, writing a $10,000 grant for a school-to-work program, and serving as a standards coach. When COVID-19 hit, he took a leadership role in helping teachers collaborate even more, developing a community discussion group to exchange technology strategies that work.

Creekside High School educator named St. Johns County Teacher of the Year

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Creekside High School educator Alicia “Ali” Pressel on Wednesday was named St. Johns County 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year. And it’s been a whirlwind 24 hours, but I’m the amount of community support the outpouring of support. Pressel, a Jacksonville resident, has been teaching at Creekside High School since 2008. AdShe teaches four levels within the St. Johns County Career Academies program, the Academy of Environmental Sciences, and Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science. Pressel will now have the opportunity to apply for the overall Florida Teacher of the Year program.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – More than 175 teachers were nominated by their principals for the 2021 VyStar Duval County Teacher of the Year award-- and now 15 semifinalists remain. The winner of the award will be announced on television Jan. 27, at the 30th annual EDDY Awards: Live from Jacksonville. Teachers selected as their school’s Teacher of the Year qualify for the award, coordinated by the Jacksonville Public Education Fund.
